Social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram have transformed the interactions of young people with each other and with the world around them. A survey conducted in 2013 in Ontario's Standard Middle Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) found that 80% of students ages 7 to 12 visit social media sites daily. Although more research is needed to determine how social media and mental health are related, 47% of students who reported using social media for two hours or more a day were also more likely to
feel lonely and depressed, or fear of missing an event or ignoring the latest trends, or failing to achieve their personal goals
• feel anxious comparing their life to the idealized one conveyed by photos or messages from friends, peers or celebrities, and describe unrealistic expectations about the topics of beauty and body image
experience or witness cyberbullying and online harassment
• suffer serious disturbances in the quantity and quality of their sleep, which is crucial to their well-being and optimal development. Replace "Zero Tolerance" Policies with Accountability and Security Measures To help children and youth build a safe and healthy relationship with social media, we need to show them how to use these powerful tools responsibly. Threats of confiscation of their phone or other portable devices, or prohibition of their use, have proven ineffective at avoiding stress and online conflict and helping them to better share time spent online and offline. Instead, encourage them to think critically and moderately with the following strategies :

As a parent, it is normal for you to have contact information for your children's accounts, pre-teens, and young teens. Let them gradually gain more online privacy by demonstrating that they demonstrate responsible behavior at all times.
